What is a
Solar Battery?

A solar battery stores the excess electricity generated by the solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, which narnesses the power of the sun. Solar batteries utilize PV panels – also called solar panels –  to capture sunlight and convert it into DC (direct current) electricity. 

The stored energy is then used to power your home or business. A solar battery is an alternative that can help reduce your electricity bills by supplementing or replacing a portion of the electrical energy you normally purchase from the utility company.

How Does it Work?

Your solar array absorbs the sun’s natural energy and converts it into usable energy for your home. Without a battery, the excess energy passes through to the grid. When a battery like the Tesla Powerwall pairs with your solar array, the excess energy from the sun fills your battery during the day so your family can put it to use after the sun goes down.

As a result, you use the sun’s energy for most of the day, reducing the total energy pulled from the grid and charged by your utility. The Powerwall connects to your system via a Tesla Gateway. This device monitors power in and out of the batteries.

Storm Mode

When a Powerwall receives notifications from the National Weather Service, the battery automatically enters Storm Mode to ensure it’s fully charged before severe weather arrives. The Tesla battery backup provides a seamless transition during an outage.

It also allows you to set “time-of-use” settings and prioritize when the stored electricity is used. As a result, you can always access the energy you need, even when the grid is offline.

Incentives

Federal and utility incentives are available to qualified Commercial customers for all our battery options. For example, you can save 30% off your total project costs with the commercial Federal Investment Tax Credit, which includes the battery and storage system you select.

Illinois homeowners and businesses in Ameren Illinois or ComEd utility territory can take advantage of a solar battery rebate, which provides $300 per kilowatt hour (kWh) for residential and $250 per kWh for commercial.
