FAQs: Tesla Powerwall 3

When the power goes out, your solar PV system is disconnected from the grid with a rapid shutdown system. This feature protects utility workers repairing the power lines. An energy storage battery disconnects from the grid too, however, the backup switch activates the energy storage and powers your appliances.

Tesla Powerwall 3 is an integrated, all-in-one system with an inverter and 13.5kWh battery storage. As of August 2024, Tesla will soon release additional storage 13.5kWh capacity modules, and later an AC coupled gateway system.

The Tesla Powerwall 3 currently is only available with the integrated solar inverter. Tesla plans to release extender units to increase your overall storage capacity, as well as an AC coupled Powerwall 3 that will work with inverters from other manufacturers.

Homeowners with Solar Edge or Sunny Boy inverters can currently connect to a Tesla Powerwall 2 system.

Homeowners with Enphase microinverters can currently connect to Enphase 5P battery storage systems or to Tesla Powerwall 2 systems.
Our battery experts do not recommend installing the battery storage system outside. The extreme Midwest weather, especially in the winter, could cause your system to malfunction when you really need it.

New battery technology encourages frequent use of energy storage and recharging the system. Take advantage of your solar energy stored during the day for nighttime use.

This will depend on your battery setup and energy usage during the outage. The Tesla Powerwall 3 exports electricity from the battery at a rate of 11.5KW and stores energy at a rate of 5KW. The system can capture solar energy from sunshine while powering appliances during the day in a power outage.
