Solar Story
Challenge: Managing Energy Costs While Supporting Vineyard Operations
Operating a vineyard and winery requires consistent energy for production, climate control, and hospitality spaces like tasting rooms. As Alto Vineyards continued to grow, leadership wanted to reduce exposure to rising utility costs while maintaining practices that respect their beautiful land and support long-term business stability.
They also saw an opportunity to enhance the customer experience and future-proof their operations as electric vehicles became more common in southern Illinois.
Solution: A Solar System Designed for Vineyards
StraightUp Solar partnered with Alto Vineyards to design and install a ground-mounted agricultural solar array tailored to the winery’s energy needs. The system was carefully planned to integrate seamlessly with existing operations and was installed without disrupting daily business, allowing the tasting room to remain open throughout construction.
In addition to offsetting energy use, the project included two EV charging stations, providing added value for visitors and aligning with the vineyard’s forward-looking approach. They even got positive feedback from customers about their support for sustainability in Illinois.
Results: Fast Payback and Long-Term Energy Stability
With solar producing power on-site, Alto Vineyards has significantly reduced electricity expenses and achieved an exceptionally fast payback period–less than a year! Energy savings are now reinvested back into the business, supporting continued operations, customer amenities, and long-term planning with greater confidence and cost predictability.
“We try as much as possible to have sustainable practices and going solar fit right with that. There is an economic incentive and a positive public relations benefit as solar becomes more and more prevalent.”
Wayne Womac, Alto Vineyards
