Ky left what seemed like a lifetime of teaching Political Science at the university level to practice what he had long preached to his students: go out there and make a difference in the world. StraightUp Solar’s CLEARE values and B-Corp status were key in Ky’s decision to join the team.
In over four years at StraightUp Solar, Ky has developed residential, commercial and nonprofit systems totaling over 1.7 MWdc. In addition, he has taken the lead on our work with the Illinois Solar for All Program (ILSfA), helping to get over 2 MW kWdc funded since 2019. In the 2023 funding window, Ky and his team are working on submitting projects totalling 1.6 MWdc to the ILSfA Program.
Helping people go solar and the resulting environmental benefits and financial savings is what drives Ky every day. For his knowledge and dedication to education, he’s been dubbed “Professor Ky the Solar Guy.” Being able to follow his passion for teaching by educating customers, his passion for politics by advocating solar policy at local, state and federal levels, and his drive to make a difference in the world are the factors that brought Ky to StraightUp Solar. He hopes to bring you into the fold as well.
This 35kW solar array, installed in 2021, produces 41,000 kWh of solar energy for the health center’s buildings, offsetting 35% of their power. The array avoids 28.7 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) from being released in the atmosphere, improving the health of the community. Funding was provided by the StraightUp Solar Legacy Fund and Illinois Solar for All state program.
This church’s 35kW solar PV system will produce 90% of their power, providing an estimated 57% reduction in their electricity bills. Project funding was made possible through the Illinois Solar for All program and a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the StraightUp Solar Legacy Fund. With lower electricity bills, now Bond Avenue Church can focus on what’s really important, their East St. Louis, Illinois community.
In 2020, this East St. Louis, IL church installed a 23.1 kW solar PV system on their fellowship hall. The system will produce nearly 30,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of energy each year, which is estimated to provide a 54% reduction ($36,000 annually) in their energy bills. The installation was made possible by the Illinois Solar for All program and through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) from the StraightUp Solar Legacy Fund.
