Central IL Field Project Coordinator
Joe’l Cardozo earned his degree in Renewable Energy and Industrial Technologies from Heartland Community College in Normal, Illinois. They offer a very comprehensive, hands-on lab oriented program that incorporates multiple full projects from site assessment and array sizing and design all the way through install and commission. They even teach National Electric Code (NEC) referencing as part of the program, which has already come in handy for Joe’l.
Before joining the team at StraightUp Solar in 2018, Joe’l worked as an intern with an automation firm, where he built and installed industrial automation control and power distribution panels, as well as helping with design as needed. According to Joe’l, it was VERY fun work and and was great for hands-on electrical circuitry experience.
Joe’l lives in Bloomington, Illinois with his wife, Lauren, their son Nikola, and their two dogs, Bruce Wayne and Harvey Dent. Joe’l and Lauren are also expecting a second son, Leo, at the end of December. In their spare time, they love to garden and cook everything from scratch, including Thai cuisine, which is the household favorite. Nikola loves construction and farming equipment, so they enjoy events where there will be cool equipment to ride. Now that Joe’l is finished with his degree, he also plans to do more traveling, camping, and hiking with family, as well as getting into metal-working as a hobby.
Joe’l on what it means to him to be a part of the StraightUp Solar team, “I am VERY excited to be a part of an organization that has a mission that aligns with my own life goals. I am very self-sufficiency and sustainability-focused. I believe in renewable energy being a huge part of protecting our planet while also working toward energy independence. The fact that StraightUp Solar is working with communities to help make solar affordable and accessible means a lot to me, as I am very community-oriented. It makes the dynamic more of a partnership than just a client/contractor relationship. I am looking forward to building great relationships within StraightUp Solar, as well as helping to grow the Solar Tribe.”
“My favorite things about working for StraightUp Solar would be a tie between the satisfaction in the labor, and knowing that StraightUp Solar is a great company to work for. I’ve always loved working in construction trades, because at the end of the day you get to SEE the product of your work. Installing solar arrays provides multi-faceted satisfaction because I not only get to see the fruits of my labor, but I also walk away knowing that this labor will eventually not only pay for itself, but also pay more than it cost. I am being active in helping individuals work toward self-sufficiency and energy-independence. With StraightUp Solar, I also get great satisfaction knowing that we take care of our team and are constantly doing what we can to improve that care. I think most people greatly appreciate being appreciated.”
